National Trust - Kings & Queens

Here is our first 2006 album recommendation, unlike the first, on their second effort named Kings & Queens, The National Trust propose something different beacause this time they include musicians from many backgrounds like R&B, funk and disco even afro-jazz, using some of that style elements and they manage to accomplish a unique style of modern soul, the production is carefuly clean and finely structured, the vocals blend perfectly with the melody making it a more poppy sound.

Again Chicago is offering a vast pile of good artists and ideas, making a sumarie of new albums of soul and funk, I could say that as the modern world is full of technology, we are missing our soul.

Here you can listen to 2 samples of Kings & Queens.

Groovy Grandpa

According to Fetish Recordings Mario Fabriani might be the oldest house music producer alive today, The past life of this man could easily be the plot of a nice mafia movie. After commiting a very serious crime in his teens Mario was sentenced to a 50 year term in an Italian prison. In this enormous period of time, he changed his life in a very radical way including becoming a buddhist. At 68 years old he was released from prison. Mario started going out to clubs to focus in other things and soon he discovered house music. One of his new intentions was creating this kind of music, he bought a computer for producing, and after a lot of work in his studio Mario was recognized, and he later sign with Fetish Recordings.

One of the most incredible facts is that Mario’s music is fresh and dynamic, in my opinion his sound is very innovative for the genre.

If you don’t believe it listen to a sample here or read a complete biography of Mario Fabriani.

Cuica: Instrument of the month

Commonly used in Brazilian music this percussion instrument has its origins in Africa and it’s made by a wooden or metal tube-like section covered on one side by a streched material that contains a hole in the middle where a wooden stick is embedded. It produces its sound by pulling and pushing a wet piece of cloth through the stick and the pressure applied on the stick can change the sound. Don’t know where to find one? Make your own.

Sam Prekop - Sam Prekop

The Chicago underground musician, Sam Prekop, released his self-titled debut album in 1999 which is produced with a marvelously low, smooth and jazzy sound. It’s like his band, The Sea and Cake, had traveled to Rio to submerge their sound into bossanova, the resulting work is a sweet treat. Perfectly produced by the fifth member of Sonic Youth and ex-Gastr del Sol Jim O’Rourke (also playing within the recording), the album has such a lovely relaxing tone that you and your stress should give it a try.

Check out this video of this MC’s from Japan known as FANFARE, this track is included in their second album with the same title, it’s a shame that all the information about them is only in japanese.

It is really amusing how japanese hip-hop sounds.

Electro Country

I never could have imagined a mix with a TB303, a Moog Voyager, an Airbase and country music, for those who doesn’t know about synthesizers the explanation of this combination is quite simple is like if you were having lunch a combination of apple pie with a lot of hot sauce and a little olives on top, The most incredible thing about this crazy combination, is the fact that it actually rules, sounds really eclectic and nice…

Listen here the sample and tell me what do you think?

Steve Reich-Future in the Past

was recently called “America’s greatest living composer.” (by The Village Voice). He is though the most original musical thinker of our time.
According to this statement his unrepeatable genious not only has contributed to create a style that was misunderstood as Minimalism at the end of 60’s, he has also exposed another way to appreciate music, His music is so rich, inventive and organic that the common listener can’t understand, his harmony, his orchestration and the meters he uses (more than 7/8s) are too complex to be listened in any given Sunday.

Therefore I suggest that you should listen to his music as timming layers. In his work he includes diferent kinds of mallets, violins, marimbas, percusions, voices, organs, etcetera, for this among with other reasons the cacophony that is formed turns in a extraordinary sinergy of time and space, that’s why some of the work of Reich was used on Three Tales, a three-part digital documentary video opera.

I venture to say that Steve Reich influenced artists of the status of Kronos Quartet, Philip Glass or, why not?, even Björk.
Now I dare you to click here and change your perception of music

“Best” Albums of 2005

By this time you will see in a lot of sites lists of recomendations of the best albums of 2005, but I wonder what criteria are they using to make the ratings? Just because some critics like them? Maybe because they sold a lot of copies? Our mission today is trying to make an unpopular list of the most propositive albums, I mean, their sound may be a turning point for the future or, at least, they’re different.
Here is a list of not-so-popular but extraordinary albums, there’s no numeric order, Because I never understood how people can decide on giving a numeric order to a lot of eclectic, fine-made things, like movies, books or music…

Beady Belle - Closer
Manu Chao - Siberie M’Etait ContÈee
Cobra Killer & Kapajkos - Das Mandolinenorchester
Gabby La La - Be Careful What You Wish For
Jazztronic - Samurai
Junior Senior - Hey Hey My My Yo Yo
Doc Martin - Mix the Vibe: Sublevel Maneuvers
Kelley Polar - Love Songs Of The Hanging Gardens
Télépopmusik - Angel Milk
Various Artists - KCRW Sounds Eclectico

If you like to suggest complementary ideas for this list, please post a comment
